An Aluminum Roof Reduces Energy Bills

There is no way to avoid the energy bill that comes at the end of the month, but there are ways to reduce them permanently. An aluminum roof works to cut on energy costs, no matter what the season may happen to be. Aluminum roofs have exceptional properties which provide many benefits, of which energy cost reductions is only one. Yet this one advantage can mean more than all the others put together. Aluminum roofing is an expensive investment, but knowing that they reduce long term expenses makes them much more attractive as a roofing solution. It may seem weird that a single material can both make your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer, but it is definitely true. Understanding how an aluminum roof accomplishes this feat may help you decide whether you want to install one in your home.

The Reflective Properties of an Aluminum Roof

The energy cost reductions which an aluminum roof provides all begins with its reflective properties. Heat can only be transferred by three different mechanisms - convection, conduction, and radiation. It's the radiative heat that aluminum combats so effectively. Aluminum roofing is highly reflective, meaning that it redirects heat energy back towards where it comes from. Aluminum reflects as much as 95% of the energy that comes its way, so you can see that it operatesvery efficiently. This works wonders no matter what the season is.

Keeping Cool in Summer

An aluminum roof keeps your home cooler in the summer, especially in the attic. Many people with aluminum roofs have reported that the attic temperature is reduced by as much as ten degrees. How does this work? Much of the heat in the summer comes from direct interaction with sunlight. Rays of energy from the sun impinge upon your home. Conventional roofing materials absorb most of this energy, transferring it inside where it makes the air warm. Aluminum roofing, on the other hand, reflects the energy back into the atmosphere. Because the energy doesn't enter your home, your air conditioning unit won't need to work at taking it away. This means that your energy bills will be reduced. Especially in hotter areas, aluminum roofing can save you substantial amounts of money.

Keeping Warm in Winter

Now that you understand why aluminum roofs keep you cooler in summer, you may be wondering how the same material can keep you warm in winter, too. In the summer most of the heat energy comes from sunlight. In the winter, this is no longer true. In cold months, most of the heat is being generated by your heater indoors. The trick to keeping warm and reducing energy costs is in retaining as much of this energy as possible. Aluminum roofing helps with this by reflecting any heat which is attempting to leave the house through the roof back inside. This means that your heater needs to do less work, resulting in lower energy costs. Heat rises, so you'd be surprised at the percentage of energy saved by having an aluminum roof.

We started offering Aluminum roofing to our customers and found plenty of success. They did reduce there energy bills and maintenance was way down.

It's amazing how much a little extra reflectivity can really save you.
