Brighten Your Backyard With Patio Umbrella Lights

While there are only so many hours in a day, find times outdoors never need to end if you brighten your backyard with patio umbrella lights. This is a truly wonderful innovation that allows you to directly light different areas of the patio through the patio umbrella. The main idea is to have electric lights embedded towards the top of the umbrella's canopy. Once natural light fades away, these can be turned on with the flick of a switch. This lets you enjoy the patio area well into the evening without having to use candles that may attract insects. A lighted patio umbrella also allows you to extend the illuminated area of your backyard well beyond the reach of flood lights attached to your home. The best part is that these can easily be attached to your current patio umbrella without too much difficulty. There are many different ways to light up your umbrella, so understanding the advantages of each will help you make a more informed decision when you go shopping.

Patio Umbrella Rib Lighting

This style of patio umbrella lighting runs strings of small electric bulbs along each rib of the umbrella to create a well lit area directly under the umbrella canopy. This type of lighting is perfect if you're trying to light a table or small area that can easily be encompassed by the canopy size. One thing to note for this design of lighted patio umbrella is that most products are only guaranteed to work for certain sized umbrellas. Take special care to make sure that the rib lighting you've chosen is applicable for the patio umbrella size you have at home to avoid having to make any returns. You should also check that the bulbs are not set up in series. A good quality rib lighting setup will not fail if a single bulb happens to go dark. Most manufacturers that sell decent rib lighting units will tell you that this is the case.

Patio Umbrella Lighting Attachments

If running strings of lights up each individual rib of your patio umbrella seems like too much trouble, there are other options available to you. One of the most popular is to get a lighting unit which attaches to the shaft of the umbrella. These attachments tend to provide a significant amount of illumination for the area under and around the canopy. The downside of a lighting attachment like this is that it tends to be battery operated. This means that you have to go through the trouble of replacing batteries from time to time. The convenience of this type of patio umbrella light may make it worthwhile, though, as the setup is very simple. It may not look as elegant as having each rib individually lighted up, but patio umbrella lighting attachments get the job done effectively and efficiently.

Solar Patio Umbrella Lights

If you're environmentally conscious, you may want to consider solar patio umbrella lights. This new invention makes use of the umbrellas exposure to natural sunlight all day to power lights all night. These typically work by using a small solar panel on the finial to power a rechargable battery. The battery then provides power to LED lights throughout the shaft and ribs of the patio umbrella. Solar patio umbrella lights typically will run for about eight hours when the battery is fully charged, so you rarely need to worry about losing power at night. Because you don't need to ever change batteries or use your home's electricity, this setup will save money in the long run. The downside to this type of patio umbrella lighting is that less light tends to be produced than through other systems. In addition, you generally have to buy a solar powered umbrella from the get-go to make it work, which can cost a bit more than other models.

LED Patio Umbrella Lights

One way to ensure that you need to do the least upkeep possible is to insist on LED patio umbrella lights. LEDs tend to last years longer than bulbs that rely on slowly burning metal wires. With LED lighting you get the same amount of illumination for longer periods of time. The only downside to this is that they tend to cost a bit more upfront since they rely on more advanced technology. The benefits to LED patio umbrella lighting far outweigh this initial cost increase, though. In fact, conventional bulbs are harder than ever to find as more vendors switch to exclusively using LED lighting.

Wow! I have never seen these before. What a great idea to have the light in the patio umbrella. And it looks like it gives of a nice soft light too.

These do create a nice light for the outdoors. Great idea.

If umbrella shaft is too small in diameter, the light slides down the shaft. If you put something around the shaft to keep the light from slipping, you must remove it before lowering the umbrella It's not bright enough for my taste; we have one. I'm looking for 6-rib brella LED lights for a 9-foot diameter umbrella that plug into an electrical outlet. No luck so far finding one.
